'Arrows' by Fences featuring Macklemore & Ryan Lewis

Fences is an alt-pop band from Seattle, and lead singer Christopher Mansfield has been friends with Macklemore for a number of years. Having both started with underground followings, the two are a perfect match, and so it's no wonder that when deciding on the first single for their new album, Fences enlisted the help of Macklemore.

Fences are known for their dark and moody love songs, and 'Arrows' is no different. The song starts off with Mansfield repeating "I live this way" and the story he tells is of his father not accepting his lifestyle choice, but that won't stop Mansfield from loving this boy who he can clearly see on the back of his eyelids. It's beautiful imagery, and an empowering song.

Macklemore comes in for the second and third verses, and in true Macklemore fashion his poetic and heartfelt rhymes make a statement. And I think what Mansfield has to say sums it up perfectly: "Part of the reason I wanted Macklemore on the song is because he speaks his mind about the fact that he doesn't always feel like he has control over his story. But he also understands that sometimes, it's okay to go with it."

It's catchy but it also speaks about difficult situations and empowering yourself over a light yet moody production supplied by Macklemore's partner in crime Ryan Lewis, and it all just clicks. Hopefully this will be the song to bring Fences out of the underground and into the mainstream.

Fences's new album will be released on October 14th.
