Following in the trend set by 'West Coast', the new track 'Shades of Cool' is a major departure from the Born to Die trip-hop sound. Centered around guitars and loads of live instrumentation, Lana's not trying to be a pop radio diva with these ready-made arena anthem cuts.
'Shades of Cool' has a gorgeous Bond feel to it in the beginning, before the song delves into more experimental territory. Lana's signature sound remains intact, but she takes a risk as her voice drowns in a sea of swirling and crashing instrumentation. It's dizzying yet heavenly.
While I love Lana's pop sound, this new live-sounding rock approach is devilishly entertaining and satisfying, and I cannot wait to hear what else the album has to offer. Ultraviolence is out on June 16th.
