'I Wish I Were Amanda Lepore' is one of my favorite tracks from PG-13. It's an incredibly catchy melancholic dance tune that is an ode to the icon herself, Amanda Lepore. In case you don't know, Amanda Lepore is one of the most influential transgendered women in history boasting a music career and a modeling career, even appearing in French Playboy.
It's well known that Lepore is Sharon's idol, and she's even had her lips done to evoke that aesthetic, and the song captures the essence of that love. The video sees Sharon painted very dull sitting in a waiting room, picking up a magazine in which Lepore is featured. She then gets taken back and has reconstructive surgery done to look like Lepore.
Interspersed are scenes of Lepore singing in her signature lack-of-clothes look, as well as Sharon sporting a Marilyn look. At the very end Sharon is a replica of Lepore. It's an evocative piece, and it's important at a time when people are paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to change their bodies to look like celebrities. Give us more, Party City!
