'Girl Groups' by RuPaul's Drag Race

We're back for the second episode ever of RuPaul's Drag Race, and this week's episode is actually the reason why the show hasn't been available online or on DVD since it aired back in 2009. It's said that the show was never able to clear the rights for the Destiny's Child songs used in this episode, and thus the show could never be offered for money. But, thankfully, the powers that be got the rights cleared and so we can finally relive this episode once again.
For the mini-challenge, the girls have to take selfies showing off a variety of emotions. It's like Ru knew how big selfies would one day become, and he intentionally planned this four years ago. Cool, huh? Anyways, Ongina and Akashia are the winners, and become team captains for the main challenge. The girls must split into two girl groups, and they have to perform a Destiny's Child song on the main stage. The girls are in charge of doing all their own wigs, make-up, costumes and choreography. Team Serving Fish headed by Onigna consists of Shannel, Nina and Rebecca while Team 3D headed by Akashia gets BeBe, Jade and (unwillingly) Tammie.
It's clear from the beginning that Serving Fish are going to be the winners and 3D are going to lose. Tammie Brown is not in her element, and the other queens just cast her off to the side because they think she's "weird." Akashia can't delegate tasks, and the girls are basically left to fend for themselves. Serving Fish, on the other hand, have a plan and are all in charge of certain aspects of their performance. This is when we see Shannel's true talents as a make-up artist manifest itself, and it's quite impressive. She's one of the best illusionist queens out there.

Serving Fish
The group is definitely the most well-rehearsed and slickest looking group. Their hair, costumes and make-up are all on point. I thought Ongina dumbed down the choreography too much to the point where it got boring at times, but other than Nina not knowing the choreography it was really well done.

3D
This group was just a hot mess. The choreography was all over the place, Akashia looked like a hooker (again), and Tammie didn't know the words or the choreography. She was definitely the white girl of the bunch, and she even suffered a nip slip. It's unfortunate because she's such an amazing and unique performer, but in an environment like this she breaks. I'm glad Ru brought her back for All Stars because she deserved a second chance.
Of course, Serving Fish were declared safe. Jade and BeBe were declared safe also (I thought BeBe looked absolutely gorgeous this week). Tammie and Akashia had to lip sync for their lives, and with a Michelle Williams gospel song, there was only going to be one winner. Tammie said during her confessional that she had planned on not performing the song, which is a shame. Akashia, however, turned it out, and gave one of the most emotional performances the show has ever seen. Say what you want about Akashia, but she sure does know how to perform. Tune in next week for my new Ru-cap as the girls channel their inner Oprah.
