'Drag On a Dime' by RuPaul's Drag Race
Hello hello hello! Welcome back for another season of RuPaul's Drag Race. With the show at it's height of popularity, the world is clamoring for more. RuPaul wants to fill the void between seasons with more drag, and he's even said that if it was in his power there would be two or three seasons of Drag Race every year! Since that would be overreaching, Ru gave us something that is almost even better: the re-airing of the infamous Season 1. The original season that started it all aired back in 2009, but was never available on DVD or on the internet to stream because of copyright issues, resulting in most fans never having seen it. Thankfully, with the show in great demand, World of Wonder got everything sorted out and we now have the season for everyone to enjoy. I've watched the season multiple times before, and it's actually my second favorite season of the show, despite it's low production value and being poorly filmed. But it doesn't matter when you have some of the most amazing queens to every grace the Drag Race runway and to set the standard for the queens to come. Gentlemen, start your engines and may the best woman win!
Just like every premiere episode, it starts off with all the queens entering and introducing themselves. Shannel is the first, making an unforgettable entrance with her ass hanging out. It's actually crazy to see her back then because she has put on so much weight since Season 1. She's like a different person. Nina packs a punch with her androgyny, Rebecca is laughable in her "mall wear," and I don't think anyone can forget Tammie Brown's kooky personality. In this season, as an added bonus, fun facts about the show pop-up on screen, as well as RuPaul himself that gives voice-over commentary. At first I thought it was going to be annoying, but it's actually hilarious and I wish they would go back and do this for all the rest of the seasons.
The first mini-challenge is of course a photo shoot with Mike Ruiz. The girls get wet and wild as they pose in front of a car while being doused in water by the original pit crew. Nina stuns, Victoria Parker gets lost in the hunky men, and Akashia lets it all hang out. Unsurprisingly, Nina is the winner. For the main challenge, the girls have to take clothes from Good Will and junk from the dollar store and create a gorgeous couture outfit. Nina and Shannel seem to not have any problems with this, getting to work immediately. Akashia and Rebecca both have no idea what to do, and it's clear they're not very creative. In Ru's walk-around, neither of them have incorporated the junk. Victoria also seems in trouble, integrating too many different elements, ultimately making it look like a costume. Will the girls take Ru's advice?
Nina Flowers
Nina is the first to grace the Drag Race runway, stunning in an orange and red outfit with a straw-like mohawk and string wrapped around her face. It's scary, yet stunning, making the judges freak out. It's pretty amazing, and you would never know she made it all from junk. Nina is fierce when she steps out on stage, and you know this is only the beginning.
Akashia
Oh, Akashia. What are you doing? She comes out on stage in this skimpy black mini-skirt and bra that looks like it took two minutes to make. Where's the junk? It's less than impressive. However, I've never agreed with the judges about her personality here. They say she looks demure and shy which I don't buy for a second. I thought she killed it personality wise.
Ongina
There's just something so special about Ongina. While she does look very "little boy" here, this is only the beginning and steps it up in the weeks to come. I love her dress which she took loofas, unrolled them, and stitched them to make her dress. It looks great on her and was one of my favorites.
Victoria "Porkchop" Parker
Victoria seems like a great person, but we don't really get to see it. Her runway is weak, and the camp factor really doesn't pay off. The outfit is a mess, and it's clear that this is the first thing she has ever sewed. I wish she had come out stronger, but someone's gotta be the first to go, right?
BeBe Zahara Benet
BeBe comes out in her signature wig and leopard print dress, looking sexy and stunning on the runway. She even has a black corset that she whips off midway and gives us a new look. Thinking ahead! BeBe may not have been the best this week, but she still is memorable.
Shannel
Shannel, once again, gives us an "Ass Alert" as she comes out in beach-ware couture. She's decked out in orange with a cape and and umbrella, oozing confidence. Her voice-over comes off as pretentious and arrogant, but that's what we love about Shannel!
Jade Sotomayor
Jade is a relatively boring queen, always being in the middle pack and never standing out. This week she comes out as an Amazonian princess which is actually pretty hot. What is cool is that queens throughout the other four seasons always come back and do this idea when they're tasked with the "garbage couture" challenge.
Rebecca Glasscock
Rebecca. She's the queen out of all five seasons I couldn't care less about. I absolutely despise her, but I've basically written her out of my memory. Maybe it's just the clown feet. That being said, she comes out in an extremely low cut dress, embellished with tin foil. The concept is great and it could have been one of the best if only it had been executed well.
Tammie Brown
My love, Tammie Brown. By far, she is the most underrated queen to ever be on Drag Race. She is so smart, but no one ever gets past the fact that she is a nut job. This week she comes out in 1920's realness, sporting a bathing suit and a beautiful periwinkle blue top. She's gorgeous, and then she exits through Ru's entrance, the only queen to ever do that!
Unsurprisingly, Nina Flowers is the winner of this challenge. Did you really expect anything else? First winner in herstory. Wow. As for the Bottom Two, Akashia and Victoria are chosen to go head to head. No surprise there. For the first ever Lip Sync For Your Life, the girls have to perform to RuPaul's iconic song 'Supermodel'. They battle it out, but Victoria doesn't lip sync half the time, and the other half she's tripping all over stage. What's going on? Victoria is the first to be told to sashay away, and Akashia is told to shanté. That's it for the very first ever episode of Drag Race. Hope you enjoyed this, and don't forget to check back each week because there is so much more awesomeness that's going to go down.
