'Slow Dancing' by Betty Who EP Review

Betty Who has been one of the biggest budding new pop stars in recent memory ever since her hit 'Somebody Loves You' went viral and got everyone talking. Her first EP The Movement consisted of four very strong jams that got her a record deal with RCA. She has been in the studio working on her debut album, but to tide us over until then she has just dropped her first major label EP. Slow Dancing sees Betty accompanied by lush synths and catchy hooks with superb production provided by Peter Thomas. Slow Dancing proves Betty is a force to be reckoned and I have no doubt she's going to redefine the pop scene when her album finally drops.

1. Heartbreak Dream - 9/10

The quasi title track and first single was released on Valentine's Day and is my second favorite Betty Who track behind 'Somebody Loves You'. 'Heartbreak Dream' is a lush synth pop track with a strong '80s prom vibe. The lyrics are relatable and you just can't help but dance to it.

2. Alone Again - 7/10

'Alone Again' is a bouncy tune that follows the sound of 'Heartbreak Dream' but is even more '80s influenced. This feels like it could be a cover that Betty contemporized a bit. Things begin to soar when it hits the bridge and the guitar embarks on a gorgeous riff that'll have you playing the air guitar along with it at home. Just come a little closer, baby. I don't wanna be alone again.

3. Giving Me Away - 8/10

Our last uptempo on the EP is 'Giving Me Away' which follows the already established '80s sound. This one's giving me Flashdance vibes with the tinkling synth in the background. Betty's voice here is heavenly as she pushes her voice out of her comfort zone a bit. I really just get lost in this one and I can imagine this being a highlight in a live show.

4. Lovin' Start - 7/10

Betty brings the tempo down a bit with 'Lovin' Start'. The percolating beat gives the tune a bit of a bounce as she switches things up a bit. There's a slight R&B influence under all the layers of synth which provides a welcome contrast. This is definitely the most sexually charged track and it's exquisitely done getting you all hot and bothered in a very tender way.

5. Silas - 9/10

Ending the EP is the gorgeous ballad 'Silas' which is a major standout on this release. Upon first listen I wasn't too impressed, but this one's grown on me and I can't stop listening to it. It's one of those ethereal tracks that puts you in a dreamlike state as Betty's evanescent voice comes in and out delivering an emotional impact. It's much different than anything else she has done and proves that her ballads are just as strong as her uptempos.

Overall Rating: 8/10
