New Winter TV Shows

Just like with my Fall TV post, I thought I'd update you guys on all the new TV shows I'm watching this winter.  If you know me then you know I watch a LOT of TV shows so it's always great to get some fresh meat on the airwaves.  As the weeks progress I'll add more of my thoughts and reviews.  Enjoy!

Are You There, Chelsea?
Even though I don't watch her nighttime talk show, I do love Chelsea Handler and her sense of humor.  Handler recently decided to adapt her biography for the small screen, and I think it's going to be a successful show.  While the humor was a tad annoying I'm sure it'll get better.  I felt the same way about New Girl, but I am over the moon about it now so I have a feeling this will be no different.  The show stars Laura Prepon of That 70's Show fame as Chelsea, and Miss Handler portrays her older sister.  Let's see how this goes!

The Firm
The Firm is a sequel to the popular John Grisham novel of the same name, and it is another legal crime drama, but mixed with more action and mystery.  Having never read the book or the movie, the storyline is pretty easy to follow and it has already hooked me.  I can definitely see this show going on for a while and having good success.  Definitely not one you must watch, but it's a great time filler!

Alcatraz
Alcatraz may just be my new favorite show!  Although J.J. Abrams, the genius behind Lost and Super 8, is only an executive producer, this is most definitely another of his creations.  The show centers around a mysterious disappearance of inmates at Alcatraz prison the night before it shut down forever, and now the inmates are returning, having not aged, and returning to their dastardly ways while only a select few people in the know.  It's going to be an incredible show, on par with Lost, and it was gripping and mind-blowing within the first half hour.  You MUST MUST MUST watch Alcatraz!

The River
The River is ABC's latest drama, deemed the scariest show on network television.  It comes from the creator of the highly successful Paranormal Activity franchise, and is shot in the same vain with hand-held cameras, albeit in a more Hollywood, polished way.  What we are watching is the filming of a television show.  Dr. Emmet Cole is an explorer and TV personality who disappeared after a venture into the Amazon, and after the beacon on his ship goes off six months later, his wife and son decide to go out and look for him.  It's a really great show and will have you clinging to your seat.  It's not as scary as everyone is making it out to be, but it definitely has its spooky moments.

Smash
To put it simply, Smash is a more adult version of Glee as it chronicles the lives of actors, directors, writers and producers as they try to get Marilyn: The Musical onto Broadway.  The cast includes some very high profile stars such as Anjelica Houston and Debra Messing, as well as American Idol runner-up, Katharine McPhee.  I absolutely loved every moment of the premiere episode, but the second was a little monotonous and boring at times so we'll see if the show can pick itself up this week.  If you like Glee and Broadway then this show is for you.

Awake
Awake is a new NBC drama that focuses on a man who has lost his son in a car accident, and the process of grief and therapy he goes through.  But it's not as simple as that.  He has created an alternate reality in his mind where his son survived but his wife died.  The larger problem here is that every time he goes to sleep and wakes up he switches between realities, but he doesn't know when he is actually awake.  He's a cop, and he begins seeing clues in one reality that help him solve a case in the other reality.  What the show sets up is the dire need for him to sort out what is reality because when the two realities collide what's going to happen?  It's a very intriguing show and always has you guessing.  It'll be interesting to see how the show builds upon the plot.

GCB
GCB was just added to the already great Sunday night line-up ABC offers, and after having watched the show there is no doubt in my mind that it is meant to take the Desperate Housewives time-slot in the fall since the show is about to air its series finale.  GCB, which stands for Good Christian Bitches, is based on a book of the same title, and is basically a primetime soap just like the amazing Desperate Housewives.  It focuses on a young widow who decides to move back to Dallas with her two children since she has very little money because her husband was involved in a ponzi scheme.  She was the "mean girl" in high school, and now all the girls she bullied in high school are determined to ruin her life.  Kristin Chenoweth plays the Head Bitch who is determined to drive her old rival back to California.  Of course, GCB is not as great as Desperate Housewives, but I found it to have a great script and I can really seeing it sticking around for a long time if they play their cards right.
