Up and Coming Female Artists of 2011

During my daily blog reading a few days ago I came across this great article that listed the Top 11 new female artists that are sure to make headlines this year.  It really is a great read and lets you know what type of artist each female is.  After picking out the ones that interested me I started downloading their music, and while I sit here typing this I am actually listening to some of it.  I thought that this would make a great series of posts so over the next week or so I will introduce you to my favorites from the list.  Also, I have included the article below so you can maybe find some new music that interests you.  Enjoy!

Lady Gaga. Beyonce. Katy Perry. Ke$ha. Rihanna. Adele. If you've seen the charts or turned on a radio in the last six months, you'd know that these are the current top female acts in pop right now. But damn if they don't have a ton of competition on the horizon. 2011 has offered an impressive new crop of talented women in music, and whether they're leading everyone to the dance floor, writing haunting melodies or slaying some slick rhymes, each one has the potential to hit it big. Get schooled on this year's batch of buzzworthy ladies who are on the cusp of greatness.

01. Oh Land, 26
Sounds Like: A less crazy-pants Bjork
Album: Her self-titled album was released in March.
The Buzz: The Danish ballet dancer-turned-experimental-pop-artist is pulling double tour duty this Summer, appearing on Katy Perry’s California Dreams tour as well as Sia’s We Are Born tour. You can also hear her songs “We Turn It Up” and “White Nights” in a few TV commercials.

02. Skylar Grey, 25
Sounds Like: A depressed Dido.
Album: Invisible drops Fall 2011.
The Buzz: Skylar first gained props as a songwriter, penning Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love The Way You Lie”. She’s also contributed words, melodies and vocals to Diddy-Dirty Money’s “Coming Home”, Dr. Dre’s “I Need A Doctor” and Lupe Fiasco’s “Words I Never Said”. She’s got some good company with hot producer Alex Da Kid, who produced her debut album, and can boast a Marilyn Manson collaboration.

03. Kreayshawn, 21
Sounds Like: M.I.A. if she exclusively rapped.
Album: No plans for a full-length album yet, though she recently signed to Colombia Records.
The Buzz: The hipster-looking MC scored some Internet fame when her “Gucci Gucci” video hit 3 million views on YouTube. (It’s now up to 7 million, and counting.) She’s currently up for a VMA for Best New Artist, but more impressively, the film school grad has been tapped to direct the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ new video for “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie”.

04. Wynter Gordon, 25
Sounds Like: Donna Summer for the new millennium
Album: With The Music I Die EP was released June 28, though her full-length album is already out in Australia.
The Buzz: The New York-based dance-pop artist first came to fame as the featured vocalist on Flo Rida’s “Sugar”. After penning tracks for Mary J. Blige and Jennifer Lopez, Gordon scored a triple platinum #1 hit Down Under with “Dirty Talk”. She’ll be hitting the road with Patrick Stump later this Summer.

05. Natalia Kills, 24
Sounds Like: Lady Gaga meets Amy Lee.
Album Date: The Perfectionist drops August 16 in the US, though it was already released in Europe this past April.
The Buzz: The noir-loving movie maven is on Lady Gaga’s Cherrytree Records label, and has worked with Akon, Jeff Bhasker and Fernando Garibay on her debut LP. Kills is also featured on LMFAO’s new single “Champagne Showers.”

06. Katy B, 22
Sounds Like: Lily Allen with dubstep.
Album: On A Mission dropped in the UK last April, and is scheduled for release in the US later this year.
The Buzz: With three Top 10 singles in the UK, the Katy B (aka Kathleen Brien) was also nominated for a Mercury Prize for Album Of The Year. She’s hitting the road with other newbie superstar from the UK, Tinie Tempah.

07. Nikki Jean, 27
Sounds Like: Lauryn Hill

The Buzz: This soul/R&B singer, formerly of Nouveau Riche, toured with Kanye West back in 2009, and was featured on Lupe Fiasco’s “Hip Hop Saved My Life”. Her collaborators get even more impressive and eclectic: Bob Dylan, Carole King and Burt Bacharach contributed songs to her debut album.

08. Neon Hitch, 24
Sounds Like: Robyn on helium.
Album: Beg, Borrow And Steal drops Fall 2011.
The Buzz: Discovered by producer Benny Blanco on MySpace, this circus performer-turned-pop-singer wrote Ke$ha’s “Blah Blah Blah” and teamed up with 3OH!3 for their contribution to the Almost Alice soundtrack. Aussie singer-songwriter Sia also co-wrote her debut single “Get Over U”.

09. DEV, 22
Sounds Like: Ke$ha on a Quaalude.
Album: The Night The Sun Came Up drops September 20.
The Buzz: Dev was featured on Far East Movement’s hit “Like A G6″ (which lifted elements from her song “Booty Bounce”), and appears on David Guetta’s upcoming dance fest Nothing But The Beat. She’s also made friends with Timbaland, who produced a few tracks on her debut LP.

10. Jessie & The Toy Boys, 22
Sounds Like: Britney Spears via Stacy Q.
Album: Her EP Show Me Your Tan Lines dropped in June, and her full-length album This Is How Rumors Start is due later this year.
The Buzz: Jessie Malakouti of the one-woman band is currently opening for Nicki Minaj and her highness of pop Britney Spears on the Femme Fatale tour. Funny enough, her song “Trash Me” was allegedly ripped off by Brit’s songwriting team for her Circus track “If You Seek Amy”. The same song was recorded and released as a digital single by Heidi Montag.

11. Rye Rye, 20
Age: 20
Sounds Like: Nicki Minaj’s younger sister
Album: Go! Pop! Bang! was originally scheduled for release in 2009, but was shelved. No release date has been set yet.
The Buzz: M.I.A.’s protege collaborated with Robyn on “Never Will Be Mine”, and is currently traveling cross country with the Swedish singer and Katy Perry.
