'Kiss Me Once' by Kylie Minogue Album Review

Kylie Minogue has a dozen albums in her repertoire and is the Queen of Pop in the land Down Under, but it was really only a year ago that I became a fan. Of course 'Can't Get You Out of My Head' is one of the most iconic songs ever written and 'Get Outta My Way' was a favorite of mine when it was released, but I had never really sat down and saw what she had to offer. Last summer I got her albums and after a couple listens I was hooked.

Kylie is the queen of the dance floor, crafting the perfect dance pop records that leave you dancing all night long while still maintaining that balance of artistry and professionalism with catchy beats and lyrics about sex. She doesn't resort to antics like Gaga, Madonna and Miley. She lets the music speak for itself, and it sure does have a lot to say.

Kylie's latest album Kiss Me Once was a struggle for her to get made. She switched record labels and management all while becoming a judge on The Voice. Throughout those difficult times, she poured her energy and passion into this record and it shows. She experiments with funkier beats courtesy of the "it" man Pharrell, but never lets go of her signature disco pop. And she talks about sex more explicitly than ever before, but it never becomes vulgar. Kiss Me Once is a seamless blend of everything that's going on in music today. It is a quintessential pop record.

1. Into the Blue - 10/10

What better way to start the album than with the lead single? 'Into the Blue' has been my jam for quite some time now. It was on repeat when it first came out, and it's one of my favorite songs of the year. It's the perfect beginning point for this album because it's got a catchy melody, a fierce dance beat all while retaining the beautiful lyricist that Kylie is.

2. Million Miles - 10/10

'Million Miles' is one of my favorite tracks on the album as it's an uptempo banger that reminds me a lot of 'Get Outta My Way' from the Aphrodite era. It's sweeping synths and Kylie's sweet and seductive vocals complement the pulsing beat. This one has to be a single.

3. I Was Gonna Cancel - 8/10

The next track is where Pharrell takes the reigns and we get an awesome mash-up of Kylie's style with Pharrell's more urban-funk signature sound. It's a great feel good song as well. Just pick yourself up and get to work, the diva advocates. It's even greater because it's based on a real experience Kylie had when she was going to record with Pharrell and broke down crying. You can really feel that emotion in the song.

4. Sexy Love - 8/10

'Sexy Love' is the first of three tracks with sex in the title, but we all know Kylie keeps it classy. The funk rhythm from the previous track weaves in here nicely, but we also get a guitar-driven power chorus ready for the airwaves this summer.

5. Sexercize - 8/10

One of the few tracks that was previewed ahead of the album release, 'Sexercize' got me excited for this album. Kylie gets down and dirty here as she sings about sex as the physical exercise it is. The giant gyrating beat is out of this world and makes you want to get out there and sexercize with the next person you see. "Tomorrow you'll be sore. Let me see you sexercize."

6. Feels So Good - 10/10

Before we get back to the sexier numbers, Kylie lowers the BPM and allows us to catch a breath. 'Feels So Good' is a gorgeous electro-pop tune that stands out and is one of my favorites. She's reminiscing about an ex-lover as her voice coos over the bouncing beat.

7. If Only - 9/10

'If Only' is another electro-pop number crafted by the geniuses behind HAIM and Charli XCX. The song is one of the album's more atmospheric and Madonna's Ray of Light moments. The song is a magnificent aural composition and I'd wager to say a highlight of her career. There's so much right in this song.

8. Les Sex - 8/10

At last we're back to the sex, and this one has become one of the fan favorites off the album. The song is all about tossing around labels, not defining just what the two parties involved are getting up to. "We could call it, I don't know. We could call it love." The '80s groove of it is a nice change of pace but it never loses that signature electro-pop sound.

9. Kiss Me Once - 9/10

For the album's title track, the magnificent Sia lent a hand for this gorgeous tune that has quickly become one of my favorites. The song builds and builds upon a heavenly beat accompanied by chiming bells which create a sensual mood. It's a declaration of love and could not be more gorgeous.

10. Beautiful (feat. Enrique Iglesias) - 6/10

This duet with Enrique is really the only song that I'm not an instant fan of. It's a slow build complete with lots of unnecessary vocoder. Enrique and Kylie's vocals mesh magnificently, but I just think it's weak. I wish it had been a proper piano ballad because I think the song would have that 'Say Something' magic to it.

11. Fine - 9/10

Completing the album is the perfect empowerment "get comfortable in your own skin" anthem. The '90s house flair that we've been seeing in music recently is in full force here and it works perfectly. The popping electro beat complements the piano and Kylie's mature lyrical prowess here to leave the listener on a fulfilled note.

Bonus Tracks:

12. Mr President - 8/10

Going a bit left of center with this first bonus track, 'Mr President' is less Kiss Me Once and more club-driven. The song reminds me quite a bit of RuPaul's 'Adrenaline' which is glorious. Kylie sings about how she wants to be the Marilyn to her President over a beat that wouldn't feel out of place on Britney's Blackout.

13. Sleeping With the Enemy - 8/10

Mellowing things out a bit and giving us an ethereal vibe is 'Sleeping With the Enemy'. Kylie purrs over an all-encompassing suave beat that gives the album a more cinematic feel. It's nothing noteworthy, but it adds another layer to the album.

14. Sparks - 10/10

Even though it's so different from the rest of the album, the B-Side to 'Into the Blue' is one of my favorite tracks on the album. With it's tropical island beat and the massive beat powering through, 'Sparks' is an instant hit that ends the album on a high note.

Tracks to Check Out: 'Million Miles', 'Feels So Good', 'If Only', 'Kiss Me Once', 'Fine'

Overall Rating: 8/10
