'Opulence' by Brooke Candy EP Review
I first blogged about Brooke Candy barely a week ago when she dropped her visually stunning video for her debut single 'Opulence' and I've since become obsessed with her. She's an openly gay artist and is really the best underground artist at the moment to be spearheading a move away from sexual discrimination in rap. Now being signed to a major record label she has the potential to break boundaries, and with a strong effort like this one I think she can. Opulence is a well-crafted hip-hop EP that is short and sweet, but with talent like Sia working on the music you can't go wrong. Brooke Candy is a goddess and you better not forget her opulence.
1. Opulence - 10/10
This is her major label debut and it makes a statement. 'Opulence' is totes my jam right now and it literally plays on a loop in my head day in and day out. It's a great motivational track and with Sia at the helm how can you not love it? While nothing can live up to this, it reminds us of how much potential talent Brooke has. You can read my original review HERE.
The second track on the EP takes a very Rihanna approach to the lyrical stylings with the Caribbean feel but also with a hint of Sia as she is the one who wrote a majority of this EP. With big punching beats and a catchy chorus, I could actually see this song catching on to radio. And let's face it, all us '90s kids are instantly gonna go for a song about pop rocks. Well this might be more of a double entendre, but still...
3. Bed Squeak - 6/10
Brooke gets down and dirty here with her ode to sex. As if the title of the track couldn't be more obvious, Brooke throws in some authentic bed squeaks to add to its credibility. The song is more along the lines of 'Opulence' as it's a hardcore rap song. While I really do like it, I feel like it's a recycled beat and feel. I just don't see anything innovative about it, but she's a fierce bitch here and I think we can all agree that "Candy is the new religion."
4. Feel Yourself (Alcohol) [feat. Cory Enemy] - 8/10
This is where things really begin heating up as we get some dubstep thrown in with tribal influences and chanting thrown over the top. This might be the most experimental track on the offering, and Brooke really shines here. Cory Enemy's vocals on the hook are actually gorgeous and only add to the complexities and dynamics of the track. I think someone needs to produce some sick remixes of this song and get it serviced to the clubs immediately.
5. Godzillionaire - 8/10
No rap release would be complete without an ego boosting self-proclamation track. On 'Godzillionaire' Brooke reminds us that she's a "ratchet bitch" and she's quite proud of herself for that but why shouldn't she be when that's what got her where she is today? It's your classic rap track with its heavy beats and Brooke just going balls to the wall. You won't forget her EP after listening to this one.
Overall Rating: 8/10
