'Ultraviolence' by Lana Del Rey
Lana Del Rey has been touring the country in preparation for the release of her sophomore album Ultraviolence in a couple weeks. We've already heard two supreme cuts from the album, debut single 'West Coast' and promo single 'Shades of Cool'. Today, the modern day siren has let us listen to the title track from the album and it's another tour de force.
'Ultraviolence' begins with a gloomy intro consisting of piano and some light guitar, and she delivers some of her best lyrics. "He used to call me 'DN', that stood for deadly nightshade cause I was filled with poison, but blessed with beauty and rage" she croons over the misty beat.
Strings begin building and we're off into the ethereal realm that categorized 'Shades of Cool'. The song may be one of the darkest offerings we've heard from Lana as she sings "He hit me and it felt like a kiss." It's violence of the the ultimate variety, and we've party to it all. Then there's a chilling spoken word segment that cuts deep.
For someone who thought she had lost her muse and would be quitting music, Lana has come up from the depths and created some of the best music the world has heard in the past few decades. Ultraviolence is beginning to read like the journal of a disturbed mind, but I cannot wait to hear what else she has to offer up.
Ultraviolence will be released on June 17th.
