Countdown of the Best VMA Performances: Part 2
On Saturday I brought you my favorite Britney Spears moments at the MTV Video Music Awards, and on Friday I began the countdown of my all-time favorite performances from the show. But as today is the day of the 2013 VMAs it's time to round off my countdown with the Top 5. It was really hard deciding who should be placed where as all five of these performances are the cream of the crop. Of course Madonna and Britney made the cut, but let's see where they all landed!
5. Madonna: 'Vogue' (1990)
Madonna's 'Vogue' is one of the biggest songs of her career, bringing a form of dance called voguing to the mainstream public's consciousness as it was created by the gay subculture at the time, even being featured in the legendary documentary Paris Is Burning. The reason why Madonna's performance from the VMAs is here is because it was one of the first times in history that an artist had brought art to life on live television. It was the first time a full-stage spectacle had been created, and it is the reason why Gaga and artists like her are able to do what they do today on stage. This was the beginning.
4. Lady Gaga: 'Paparazzi' (2009)
How can the world ever forget this performance? This is Lady's Gaga finest performance, and it'll be interesting to see if she can ever top this one in the years to come. Gaga recreated her 'Paparazzi' video (to some extent) on stage as she struggled to walk with crutches, but then she got up and busted out some fierce choreography with her dancers flanking her. And as she walked down the stage, blood started flowing out of her and then she hung herself. It shocked the world, and Gaga solidified herself as one of the world's finest performers that night.
3. Madonna, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Missy Elliott: 'Like a Virgin/Hollywood' (2003)
This was the night that pop royalty was born. Madonna brought Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera on stage with her to perform her hit 'Like a Virgin'. The performance oozed sex, and it was incredible watching these pop divas on the stage performing together. And then the moment that shocked the nation happened: Madonna leaned in and kissed Britney, and that was all that was in the headlines for the following week. That was the moment that Madonna passed the torch on and named Britney the Princess of Pop. This moment has become one of the most popularly referenced moments in pop culture, and for good reason.
2. Britney Spears: 'I'm a Slave 4 U' (2001)
Britney has had some incredible performances over the years, but there is one that sticks out and will forever in my mind be the best performance in her illustrious career. The night that she performed her most famous choreography alongside live animals can never be erased. She awed the world once again with her performance of 'I'm a Slave 4 U'. She was on point that night, looking sexy and killing her dance moves. This one almost took the #1 spot on my list, but I had to give it to the King of Pop.
1. Michael Jackson: 15-Minute Medley (1995)
And rounding off the list coming in at #1 is the King of Pop, the legendary and extraordinary Michael Jackson! At the 1995 VMAs, Michael performed a FIFTEEN minute set, going from song into song, electrifying the stage. It's the longest performance in TV history, even longer than the half-time show at the Super Bowl. And for a majority of it Michael is alone on stage. Who else can captivate and own a stage by themselves like that? Despite lip syncing the entire performance, Michael killed it and showed why he was the greatest entertainer to ever walk the earth. Nothing can ever rival this spectacle.
