'Union J' by Union J Album Review

I have been a champion of Union J ever since they were on The X Factor UK last year because I saw huge potential in them. This week they finally released their eponymous debut album, and it's quite fantastic. The boys deliver hit after hit, and their vocals are on point. They are seriously one of the most vocally talented boy bands out there, and Jamie in particular can sang. Union J have a very distinct sound, and everyone they got to write their songs crafted pop perfection. There are so many dynamics to this album yet they keep in consistent and cohesive. I'm totally in love with this album, and I urge you to check these boys out because they will be international stars in the near future.

1. Carry You - 9/10

'Carry You' is Union J's debut single, and it could not be a better way to kick off this album. The song was an instant jam when it was released, and it's still a fantastic pop song that doesn't ever get old. It's the perfect way to set the tone of the album. Check out my original thoughts HERE.

2. Beautiful Life - 8/10

This is the group's second single that they released very recently, and it's interesting that they chose to go for such a slow song as the second track on the album. That being said, the song is a fantastic acoustic type track that roars once it gets to the chorus. Within these first two tracks we've already seen great diversity from the group. Read my full review HERE.

3. Loving You Is Easy - 10/10

This is easily my favorite track on the album. It's a huge pop jam that just gets better and better as it progresses. Jamie shows off his falsetto here in the chorus, and it's gorgeous. It's the perfect sentimental dance track, and I would love to hear some awesome remixes of this song because I think it could take this song to a whole other level. And I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up being the group's third single.

4. Last Goodbye - 8/10

'Last Goodbye' is another uptempo that has an awesome beat, and the boys sing in unison on the chorus. It's a great feel good track, and you just get into a groove while listening to it. It's another solid pop song with a very distinct Euro-pop feel.

5. Beethoven - 8/10

I totally am in love with this song because the lyrics are clever and it's so catchy. It starts off with guitar before turning into another great pop jam. The boys say they want their significant other to be their music and they will play them like an instrument and be their Beethoven. It's so cute in the cheesiest way possible, and that's what makes it great.
6. Head In the Clouds - 6/10

This is a track that I haven't completely fallen in love with because of the lyrics. I just don't connect with it, and I don't like the message. Also, the way they sing the chorus with a weird pause makes it very awkward and jarring. It's got a California/laid-back vibe to it. I'm just not a fan.

7. Where Are You Now - 9/10

'Where Are You Now' is another standout track on the album. So far the band has made some really great songs about love and heartbreak, and this is another prime example. It's got an instantly recognizable chorus, and it's a total fist-pumping jam. I love that Jamie has been featured so heavily on this album, as he is on this one, because he just has such a phenomenal voice. I really hope this becomes a single as well.

8. Save the Last Dance - 8/10

I totally get Daft Punk 'Get Lucky' vibes from this song, but then they up the ante and make it even more of a dance track. This is yet another pop jam that you can't help but dance along with. It's a great party song.

9. Amaze Me - 9/10

Before the album ends, the boys slow things down a bit with a mid-tempo. The boys take turns singing, putting their vocals on display, and it's fantastic. Every one of these boys can sing darn well. The writers they got for their songs were the perfect choice because this has another insanely catchy hook, and it's instantly recognizable. It has got a beautiful atmosphere about it, and the emotional just spills out of the song.

10. Skyscraper - 10/10

Yes, this is a cover of Demi Lovato's hit. I have never, and still don't, like Demi's song. I've always thought everyone sings it better than her, and this is no exception. In fact, Union J's rendition might actually be my favorite. They take some liberties with the melody which is very welcome, and the boys' voices sound incredible on this record. It's a heavenly song, and another highlight of a flawless album.

11. Lucky Ones - 8/10

The only original song that's not an acoustic track which is a bonus track is 'Lucky Ones'. I seriously can't say anything bad about these boys. I actually think this song is better than 'Head In the Clouds' and should replace it on the album. It has a catchy chorus, and the production is quite interesting. It's not conventional, but the chorus is massive and has you instantly captivated.

Tracks to Check Out: 'Carry You', 'Loving You Is Easy', 'Where Are You Now', 'Amaze Me', 'Skyscraper'

Overall Rating: 8.5/10
