'Happy Little Pill' by Troye Sivan

YouTube stars are one of the most important parts of popular culture at the moment. They're a breed of talent unlike the world has ever seen before, and they have legions of pre-teen girls throwing themselves at them similar to The Beatles pandemonium. Troye Sivan is one of the most famous with over 2.3 million subscribers, but he's more than just a YouTube personality.

Troye has always had a passion for music from competing on StarSearch and dropping a myriad of EPs over the past few years, but he is now here with his major label debut. His debut EP TRXYE is due out August 15th on EMI Australia, and the 19 year-old has just debuted the lead single.

'Happy Little Pill' may actually be one of my favorite releases of the year. I'm getting major Aiden Grimshaw vibes with this one which is huge praise. It's a very moody track built over walloping beats and silky smooth synths. Bringing to mind Broods as well as the Lana Del Rey-esque turns of phrases, this has the potential to be a smashing success.

He may be one of Tyler Oakley's best friends (#TROYLER4Lyfe), but he's a star in his own right. "Oh blazed eyes, empty hearts / Buying happy from shopping carts, / Nothing but time to kill, sipping life from bottles," he croons. It's dark and depressing, it's otherworldly, and it's catchy as hell. This may be making my Best of 2014 list this year...

Troye Sivan's debut EP TRXYE is set to be released on August 15th.
