American Idol 2012: Top 5

This week on American Idol the Top 5 took on British Pop songs as well as songs from the 60s. There were some pretty good moments, but there were too many low points during the night that overall this week was a bust. Hollie was the star of the night, and Jessica and Phillip crashed and burned. The best part of the night was the guest mentor Steven Van Zandt, guitarist for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. He was hilarious, and gave the hopefuls some really great advice.

Hollie Cavanagh
Hollie came back with a bang last week, and this week she's keeping up the momentum. She came out all confident and sang the heck out of that song. She worked the stage like a real pop star, and this moment really showed her off as a performer and not just a great vocalist.

Phillip Phillips
Phillip did another one of his rearrangements, and while I love when he puts his own twists on things, this one was a little boring. There wasn't any "wow factor" to it, and I'm disappointed in him two weeks in a row now. I can't understand why he's going downhill all of a sudden.

Skylar Laine
Skylar pounced onto the stage again, and killed it. Man, can this girl rip into a song or what? It's another classic Skylar performance with gusto to spare. I could seriously see her in the finale, but things never work out as they should.

Phillip and Joshua
Could this duet be more awkward? Phillip and Joshua obviously did not enjoy singing a love song together, and their vocals did not blend well at all. Joshua tried to over-sing like always, and it was not a pleasant compliment to Phillip's style. One of the worst duets to ever be done on this show.

Jessica Sanchez
Jessica's been going downhill fast recently, and this is by far her lowest moment on the show. Why the hell would she choose to sing 'Proud Mary'?! It was beyond cheesy, and it was simply a train wreck. Nowhere near a Top 5 performance.

Hollie Cavanagh
This girl is slaying once again. I wasn't sure about taking on Leona Lewis' 'Bleeding Love', but it worked really well. I think she could have benefitted from it not being acoustic, but her vocals made up for that. I actually felt emotion in this song unlike anything I've felt from her past performances.

Phillip Phillips
Blake Lewis completely SLAYED this song like no other on Season 6 of Idol, and after that every rendition of this song pales in comparison. It also doesn't help that this song could not be less suited to his voice. It was all kinds of bad, and the falsetto made it worse. I think this is Phillip's lowest point in the competition.

Jessica, Skylar and Hollie
This was actually a decent trio performance. The girls have great chemistry together, and they play off each other really well. Much better than the boys' performance!

Skylar Laine
I think this is one of Skylar's strongest performances. It was a really great performance piece, and her vocals soared on this ballad. Skylar is an all-around great performer, and could have a good Carrie Underwood-style career if she plays her cards right.

Jessica Sanchez
Once again it's a great vocal, but she has no personality. If only Jessica had personality I'd be rooting for her to win, but she's lost me. This could have been a big moment for her, but she dropped the ball once again. I think this had to be her worst night of the competition.

As you can see, there were more bad performances than good tonight. Joshua was somewhere mid-pack this week. Based on the performances, I would have said that either Jessica or Phillip should be eliminated because they both had their worst nights this week. Unfortunately, the second best person of the night, Skylar, was eliminated. Again, another one of my favorites eliminated! I'm disliking the final crop of contestants more and more. I'm not going to enjoy the finale, I can already tell.
