'Choke' by Glee

This was an interesting episode of Glee for me. It had some really great moments, some really bad moments, and some very rushed moments. Rachel and Kurt have their auditions for NYADA which was a high point of the episode. They wrote in a really great storyline with Coach Beiste (who has been MIA for a veeeery long time) which involves spousal abuse. The episode also focused on Puck and his attempts not to fail his senior year. Here we go!

This is one of these performances that I detest on Glee. It's so over-the-top and so over-done that it's hard to enjoy. I really like Puck and I always enjoy when it is his turn to sing, but to me this was a bust and did not serve him well.

'Chicago' is one of the best musicals out there, and I was so excited to see this song done. It was interesting, though, that they chose to do this song because it is extremely explicit and graphic, but I think the girls did it very well. Santana was great as ever, but it was really fun seeing Tina strutting her stuff on stage. She never gets much screen time, but she really showed off her acting and singing chops with this one.

Go, Kurt, go! Not only was the singing spectacular, but Kurt gave the performance of his life on stage in front of Carmen Tibideaux, a world-renowned singer and professor at NYADA, played by the incomparable Whoopi Goldberg. I've never seen Kurt dance like this before, and it was just so camp and over-the-top but I couldn't help but love it.

This is another Puck song (along with the other male Glee clubbers), and it was another fail, if not one of the biggest fails of the entire series. The song's lyrics are ridiculous and the entire scenario of studying for Puck's exam was ridiculous. I honestly couldn't stand watching this performance. Why give Puck, who actually has a good voice, this travesty to sing?

This is the highlight moment of the episode. It is one of those moments that they have only done a few times throughout the series, and I am happy they've done it again. After Beiste tells the girls what really happened between her and Cooter, they sit down and sing a stunningly beautiful acoustic version of Florence + The Machine's song 'Shake It Out'. The girls' voices soar above and beyond the heavens, and I got chills multiple times. So beautiful.

After Rachel's shocking moment where she choked during her NYADA audition, she breaks down and sings to get out all the pain. It was a very sad moment, but you know eventual she's going to get in no matter what she has to do. It was a beautiful rendition of Kelly Clarkson's song so I applaud her for that.

I loved seeing the Coach Beiste spousal abuse storyline because it's a powerful message to send to young people out there, but I had two major problems with it. She lied to girls and got back with Cooter, and the whole thing was too rushed. They should have drawn it out over a couple of episodes rather than just flinging it at us in the space of an hour. It was also nice to focus on Puck for once, and we finally got to see his dad! We saw some great character depth with him, and the plot of him flunking was interesting, but could have been handled in a more mature way. This was an episode with a mixture of good and bad, but overall it was pretty good.
