The 2012 MTV Video Music Awards

Last night was the annual MTV Video Music Awards. The VMAs are my favorite award show of the year because they usually have some fantastic performances, and most of the awards I usually agree with. Last night the show was only two hours long which made it nice because there wasn't a lot of filler and unnecessary skits. During the pre-show, Ke$ha announced that she will finally be releasing her new single 'Die Young' later this month. Nicki's reaction to winning Best Pop Video for 'Starships' was priceless. You go, Nicki! Rihanna won the coveted Video of the Year award which I found a bit surprising. The night overall was very good even though it may have been a bit lackluster compared to last year's show.

UPDATE: Hold the phone people! I just saw a video from the red carpet in which Nicki was being interviewed and she spilled the beans on some amazing new info. Firstly, she confirmed that she will be re-releasing her album in November as an EP entitled Pink Friday...Roman Reloaded: The Re-Up and the first single will be released next week! And if that wasn't enough, when asked about being a judge on Idol she tried to play it off and make it sound like it isn't a done deal, but you could see the glint in her eye that confirmed it all. It's happening people!!! Get ready for more Minaj domination.

The night started off with a bang as Rihanna took the stage to open the show. She kicked things off with her new single 'Cockiness (I Love It)' featuring A$AP. This was one of the first songs I LOVED on the album so it's nice to see it getting the single treatment. The vocals were a little weak, but what do you expect from Rihanna? Then she transitioned into her smash hit 'We Found Love' where she pushed her way through the crowd. I thought it was actually a very good performance, and the audience interaction was really cool.

Next, it was P!nk's turn to take the stage. She was introduced flawlessly by the one and only Miley Cyrus who was rockin' her new 'do, and also revealed earlier in the night that she will be releasing a new single this month! Anyway, P!nk began with her original hit 'Get the Party Started' but quickly went into her single 'Blow Me (One Last Kiss)' which was complete with dancing lips. Even though she rocked the stage and put on another great performance, I was underwhelmed by her vocals. It looked like she wasn't even trying to sing live. What's going on, P!nk?

Then Frank Ocean took the stage. I found the performance to be very boring, and it couldn't even keep my attention. The constant singing in a falsetto was very annoying.

Then, the big winners of the night, One Direction made their way on stage amongst a throng of hormonal tween girls. I'm not ashamed to admit I love the boy band, and their performance of 'One Thing' was very good. These guys are going to have a long future.

Next up was up-and-coming rapper 2 Chainz who was joined by Lil' Wayne. As much as I dislike Taylor Swift, this performance had to be the worst of the night. I didn't mind 2 Chainz (even though I didn't understand most of what he said), but it was Lil' Wayne that left me in a sour mood. I've NEVER seen him act like that before. He was prancing around stage like a lunatic and being very childish. He did the same thing when Nicki was accepting her award, and I thought it was disrespectful. What was going on last night?

Next, it was Green Day's turn to rock the stage. I love Green Day, but I haven't really liked any of their songs they've released off the new album. I'm just not feelin' 'em, and this performance was the same way. Nothing exciting to grab my attention.

After Green Day, the one and only Alicia Keys took the stage to perform her new single 'Girl On Fire'. And who makes appearances? Nicki Minaj and Olympic athlete Gabby Douglas! Nicki came in during the bridge to sing her verse which was brilliantly executed; much better than on the recording. After Nicki, Gabby came on and did a few tricks and flips as Alicia ramped up the energy and sang her heart out. In terms of Alicia, I actually thought the performance was a little weak. The song is definitely hard to sing, but it sounded like she was screaming the whole time.

Probably the worst decision of the night was getting Taylor Swift to close the show. Her single 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together' is atrocious, and this performance was the same. It looks like she's taking the pop star route for her new album (selling out, are we?), and it just doesn't suit her. Plus, her vocals were terrible last night. Why does everyone like her so much?!
