New Fall 2012 TV Shows

It's that time of the year again! My favorite time of the year has to be Fall because not only does school begin and all the plethora of new good music comes out, but it means the return of our favorite TV shows as well as some brand new ones. This year has brought with it some great new shows that I have fallen in love with, and hopefully there's some that you'll like to. As always, check back through the weeks because I'll continue updating this post as more shows premiere.

666 Park Avenue
666 Park Avenue is by far my favorite new show of the year. I just watched the pilot last night and it blew me away, delivering more than I could have ever hoped for. The show focuses on the Drake located in the Upper East Side of Manhattan where the owners (played by Terry O'Quinn and Vanessa Williams) hire a new couple as the new co-managers who oversee the day to day operations of the apartment building. BUT, the Drake is possessed by a demonic force, and we see that once a new residence enters it becomes very hard for them to leave... The show brings together all of the brilliance of horror and supernatural films into a show that will have you cringing and speechless every step of the way. The acting and special effects are superb, and I'm excited to see where this show goes.

Revolution
Revolution was my most highly anticipated show of the Fall based on previews, but it didn't hold it's ground once I watched it. Don't get me wrong - It's still an excellent show, but it wasn't as "epic" as I thought it was going to be. The show takes place in a post-apocalyptic dystopian future that was caused by a blackout which happened fifteen years prior. All electricity is gone from the world, but one family has the key to finding out what happened and hopefully restoring the world. The government has collapsed and everything is run by militias, but there is also a patriotic resistance that's trying to overthrow the militias. The acting isn't bad and the visuals are quite striking, but it just lacks that special "oomph" that I thought it would have.

The New Normal
I can't even begin to tell you how much I am in love with The New Normal. It has sheer brilliant writing, and comes from the mind of Glee, Nip Tuck and American Horror Story's Ryan Murphy. The show centers around a gay couple who decide to have a surrogate carry their child. But they don't know what they're getting themselves into when this surrogate comes with a kooky old-for-her-age daughter and a psycho-racist-homphobic-right wing grandmother. The show has quite possibly the best portrayal of any gay character on TV ever, and the dysfunctional lives that these people live show just how far our society has come. It's not such a stretch from real-life which we have come to associate as being the new "normal." I cannot begin to praise this show enough, and it's a must watch for sure. Make sure to check out Episode 3.

Go On
Nothing has ever quite filled the void that Friends left when it went off the air in 2005, and the world has been trying to cling on to the actor's post-projects like the failed Joey spin-off and Courtney Cox's Cougar Town, but once again we are trying to cling on to another project. Matthew Perry is back in his new show Go On which focuses on a popular sportscaster who loses his wife and is sent to therapy where he meets a collective group of people who become his new friends and send him down a new path in life. It's not the best show and can be boring at times, but it has had some hilarious moments that make it worth watching.

The Mindy Project
The Mindy Project has been hit with some negative reviews, none of which I think have been justified. I actually really enjoyed the first episode, but we'll have to see where it goes. The show focuses on Mindy who is a doctor and is getting on in her years and just wants to find a man. She also is one of those people who can't say no, and so she helps patients who don't have insurance and the like get the help they need even though it's illegal. It's a fun cute show that isn't meant to be a huge ratings hit, but if it's your niche then it should hit the spot just fine.

Beauty and the Beast
The CW has rolled out some pretty great TV shows over the years like Smallville and The Vampire Diaries, and now two new shows have been added that I'm sure are going to be huge hits. The first, Beauty and the Beast, is a retelling of the original TV series that aired from 1987 to 1990. The original show was an interesting twist on the story with Catherine Chandler (Belle) who is a DA and Vincent (Beast) who lived in an underground village with a bunch of misfits. The new CW version obviously updates the show and Catherine (played by Kristen Kreuk of Smallville fame) is once again a DA, but Vincent is a man presumed to be dead and he hides out with one of his close friends in an abandoned chemical plant. It was actually a really interesting take on the show, and I enjoyed the way they brought it to life. There were low moments during the show, but the action scenes were actually incredibly well shot which made it fun to watch. It'll be interesting to see how the show progresses and if it gets renewed for next year.

Arrow
The second CW show ordered was Arrow which focuses on Oliver Queen, the vigilante known as Green Arrow. You may remember Oliver Queen from Smallville who was one of Clark Kent's best friends. Unfortunately, Justin Hartley is not involved in the show and a new actor was brought on. I'm not sure if he was the best choice based on his acting so far, but he has time to improve. The show actually exceeded all my expectations and was thoroughly an entertaining show. It's nice watching the show because we finally get to see some of Oliver's backstory which we never got to see on Smallville. The show was actually the most watched show on the CW in the past three years. It'll be fun to watch how the show progresses and if it could become a new sensation.

Nashville
One of the dramas I was looking forward to the most was Nashville mainly because of Hayden Panettiere and Connie Britton, but also because music shows have a soft spot in my heart. It was pretty well done, but at the same time it wasn't as good as I hoped it would be. I'm not sure this role really suits Connie Britton very well, but maybe because that's I got used to her on American Horror Story. Hayden is definitely the star of the show, and I'm so happy she's back on TV again as I loved her in Heroes. Basically, the show revolves around the new up-and-coming starlet stealing the spotlight from the veteran Queen of country music and how it is affecting their lives. The show explores the inner workings of the music business world which I thought was one of the more intriguing parts of the show. It kind of has that feel of Smash where it's a behind-the-scenes kind of show that gives you a glimpse into the real world. The music is all original which also makes it fun to watch, and some of the songs are extremely good. I can't wait to see how the show progresses over the year.
