RuPaul: Extravaganza Eleganza!

Hey everyone! I'm back doing one of the things I love most: joint-blogging! My best friend and fashion blogger extraoridinaire, Amber, from Amberlee Tea is back blogging with me. We're combining our opinions on the music and fashion of our favorite celebrities once again. We've previously covered Madonna, but this time we're taking on a man who has changed the world in ways too numerous to count. Not only is he a talented singer and musician, but he is also a fashion icon and activist and TV personality. This man we're talking about is the self-procaimed "Supermodel of the World" and the leading Drag Queen of the world, RuPaul!

Before we begin, here's a little teaser from Amber...

"I fell in love with this 70’s inspired look the second Ru came out on the runway. (It almost reminds me of Joseph’s Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat!) All the bright colors and the belt make a great statement without trying too hard. I also think this is a great wardrobe strategy as well. By having dresses or stand alone pieces, it can be extremely easy to get dressed with ease because you know whatever you put on will work."

And another one of Ru's many runway looks:
If you want to get the low down on the rest of RuPaul's most sickening fits and fashions, click here to head on over to Amberlee Tea and let the fashionista tell you herself. You know you want to!

RuPaul Charles is a man who many people look up to and are influenced by. I cannot tell you how much influence he has had on my life even though I've only known about him since January. He is a man who proves that anyone can come out on top no matter what adverse situations they go through, and he has the ability to instill confidence in you and makes you feel fierce by simply being the person he is. And he always knows what to say - his eloquence constantly stuns me. So who is this guy?
RuPaul began performing in drag in Atlanta, Gerogia in the '80s. He worked as a musician and filmmaker who struggled like most do. He appeared in the film Starrbooty in 1987 and produced the soundtrack. He began really working the club scene in Georgia and New York where he began making a name for himself, and he became a staple of the annual Wigstock Drag Festival. In 1993, things really began to take off with the release of his debut album Supermodel of the World which spawned dance/club hits that were played heavily on MTV. This caused him to gain a much larger following which then led him to have his own talk show on VH1 where he teamed up with long time friend Michelle Visage. As his personality grew he began appearing in films like The Brady Bunch Movie and A Very Brady Sequel, and he has appeared on television shows such as Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Walker, Texas Ranger and Ugly Betty. With his influence on the drag world booming and the creation of his own record company, RuCo Inc., he set out to create a reality competition show that would crown America's Next Drag Superstar. And thus RuPaul's Drag Race was born. Drag Race has forever changed the world of drag by opening it up to the world and making drag a household conversation piece. I can't begin to tell you how addicting this show is, but you can watch all four season on Netflix and find out for yourself. It's seriously one of the best reality shows I've ever watched. The show has also created the spinoffs RuPaul's Drag U (which takes biological women and gives them a drag transformation to show them their true potential and change their outlooks on life) and RuPaul's All Stars Drag Race (which begins on October 22nd). The RuPaul empire is at its height right now, and RuPaul is a man to be celebrated. Let's get to the music and fashion now, shall we?

Top 5 Songs:

1. Responsitrannity
'Responsitrannity' has to be one of the greatest songs ever, and is by far RuPaul's best song. The track is another one of his signature dance songs, but this one's more mellow and is very anthemic. The song is about being who you are and never forgetting that you are an all star. Ru sings that he had no one to look up to, but he once heard on the radio to "don't stop believing" and so we need to embrace ourselves and not give in to the negative opinions. It's really a fabulous song that can cheer you up in a heartbeat. It's the best blend of good dance music and music with a powerful message. "Don't be a victim of what you don't know."

2. The Beginning
This is the first track off Ru's Glamazon album, and it could not be perfect. It's a really huge dance track that will get you up and moving. It's also got a catchy chorus, but importantly it also has a great message. He sings that today is a new day, and if you want to change things then "this is the beginning of the rest of your life." Nothing's impossible and Ru wants us to know that we can "change the world, change your mind, we defy space and time!"

3. Glamazon
No list could be complete without 'Glamazon' the title track off Ru's latest album and the runway song for Season 4 of Drag Race. While 'Glamazon' isn't a lyrical masterpiece or a song with a strong message, it remains supreme as probably the catchiest and fiercest song RuPaul has released. It's one of those that you can blast at full volume and just have a huge dance party to. The song celebrates the beauty of Queens as Ru chants "Sashay, shanté, panther on the runway / She's like a female phenomenon, she's a Glamazon."

4. Champion
'Champion' is the title track off Ru's fourth studio album, and it is also the crowning song every year during the finale of Drag Race. Although the song was written for the winners of the show, the lyrics are ones that Ru wishes everyone to adhere to because in our own right we are all champions. He sings, "Champion, greatest of them all / You're a champion, never gonna fall / You're a champion, still standing tall / You're a champion, and you'll always be a hero."The song (like the album) has this great dance sound mixed with R&B and a throwback '80s feel to it. A great song all around.

5. Jealous of My Boogie / Main Event
For the fifth place I just couldn't decide which song to pick. 'Jealous of My Boogie' is one of the most fun songs Ru has released, but at the same time it was the only song used on Season 1 so hearing it at least twice every episode made me kind of sick of it. But despite that I still love the song. The song is about being who you are, and even if people don't like you they're still going to be jealous about you for some reason. It's got a major '80s vibe to it and is just plain fun. 'Main Event' starts with one of the coolest piano intros and sets the stage for what's to come. It almost takes you to a small intimate club setting, but then it ratchets up and gets you to dance. What I love most about this song are Ru's vocals because they're smoky on this song, and it gives it a really cool vibe. And the song is very disco sounding which is even more fun. The song is about not letting heartbreak ruin your life, and Ru's advice is to "dance away the pain."

Songs That Need to be Heard:

These are a list of songs that I love so much that I think you need to hear them. They're all the more inspirational side of Ru that make you emotional and really show off why he is such an incredible visionary and person.

Never Go Home Again, Destiny Is Mine, Let's Turn the Night, Superstar, Get Your Rebel On

Top 5 Albums/EPs:

1. Glamazon
My introduction of Drag Race was Season 4 so naturally all the songs were from Ru's fifth album Glamazon so this was the first album of his that I downloaded. And boy am I glad I did! Glamazon is honestly the best dance pop album I've heard and I swear I'm not exaggerating. Each and every song on the album is dance, but the songs range from mindless fun like in 'Click Clack' to inspirational anthems like 'Responsitrannity'. The album is Ru's finest effort putting everything I love about him into one piece of art. There is not one bad song on the album, and it's one that you can have a dance party to but also be emotionally affected by. Glamazon represents everything that RuPaul is.

2. Champion
When I first listened to this album I hated it. I thought it sounded dated and just plain dull. But after giving it a chance I have fallen in love with it making it my second favorite Ru album. Like I've mentioned earlier, the album is very '80s influenced with many of the songs sounding like they could have been released earlier in his career. But the interesting thing is that it's a much more polished sound and experiments with the dance club sound that Ru has been doing for the past few years. This album is an interesting one because a lot of the tracks were based on the individual Queens of Season 1. For instance, 'Champion' was written about Season 1 winner BeBe Zahara Benet, and 'LadyBoy' was written about everyone's favorite Ongina. The album is sassy and funky, and blends the past with the present in the perfect way. The album also includes the theme song for Drag Race as well as a collaboration with the Dean of Drag on Drag U, Lady Bunny.

3. Drag Race
I despise remix albums. I think they're just a way to make extra money and most of the time the tracks are so boring. A few good ones exist, such as Ke$ha's I Am the Dance Commander + I Command You to Dance, but they're few and far between. With Ru owning his own record label he really has the ability to put out quality material, and that's why not one but two of his remix albums have landed on my countdown. The first is Drag Race which you can guess is the unofficial soundtrack for the show, and it contains remixes of the songs from Champion. All of the remixes sound fresh and make a cohesive piece of material that seems like its own album. If you want something to dance to then you should definitely buy this.

4. SuperGlam DQ
And here is the second remix album. This one, SuperGlam DQ, is Ru's most recent compilation album and includes remixes of hits from Glamazon as well as the theme song from Drag U and a new song 'Sexy Drag Queen'. The album switches things up constantly making every song sound fresh. The highlights of course are the Drag U theme and 'Sexy Drag Queen' (which is being used as the runway song on All Stars). It's another fun dance album that adds another dimension to Ru's already great music.

5. Supermodel of the World
No list would be complete without Ru's debut album that put him on the map and proclaimed his status as the 'Supermodel of the World'. The title track gives us the great Ru-quote "You betta werk!" The album is obviously dated and suffers from low production quality, but nevertheless it is the ultimate introduction to the world of RuPaul and the culture of drag in the '80s. Most of the songs are spoken word and generally comedy-esque so they're not as fun, but it's still the first incarnation of Ru that the world was really exposed to.

Music Videos:

I'm not going to do a ranking of my favorite Ru videos, but I'll just include the ones from each season of Drag Race to give you an idea of the music as well as the show and the empire RuPaul has created. Each video includes the Top 3 contestants from each season, and the videos are in chronological order starting with Season 1.
