'Crazy Stupid Love' by Cheryl Cole featuring Tinie Tempah
Cheryl Cole, or Chezza as she's lovingly referred to by fans, is our favorite Girls Aloud member who was also my favorite judge on The X factor UK. After a couple years away from the show, Cheryl's coming back this fall which could not be a better move, and with that of course she's gearing up to release her fourth studio album.
So the thing with Cheryl is that I like her singles but don't like her albums. A Million Lights was her best by far, but it was still messy like the other two. That being said, 'Fight For This Love' and 'Call My Name' are some great pop songs. I don't know what it is, but Cheryl just never goes the distance.
Coinciding with her time back on The X Factor, Chezza has just released the lead single from her new album. After such a long wait I was expecting big things. 'Crazy Stupid Love' is a bit of a let down. Kicking off with a string of "la la las" the song hooks us in with catchy babble that seems to be the new thing in pop (see: Nicole Scherzinger).
But what is really great about the song is the trend that Jason Derülo started: horns. 'Talk Dirty' and Ariana's 'Problem' have been heavy on the brassy yet sassy instruments, and 'Crazy Stupid Love' uses the sexy sax to amp up the danceability factor. Without them I don't think the song would be that great.
Cheryl's voice, as always, is gorgeous but the song is just too flat. With some help, Tinie Tempah's rap provides a nice peak in the song, delivering perhaps one of the greatest lines of the year: "She had my D - now she dickmatized." What even?
It's a shame that Chezza's long-awaited return wasn't something more spectacular. Maybe her second single will be better? But if this is the best she has to offer, I'm not excited for the album.
