'Heartbeat Song' by Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson's last album Stronger was one of the best of the year and gave us some huge songs, but that was a few years back and with the exception of her phenomenal Christmas album, Wrapped In Red, we haven't had anything new from the original American Idol. But that all changes today.

This morning Kellegend dropped the lead single from her seventh studio album, Piece by Piece. Over the weekend she used her precious baby River Rose to tease the song, but unfortunately the song doesn't live up to the cuteness of the baby.

'Heartbeat Song' was written alongside former Idol judge and 'Gone'-writer Kara DioGuardi, and the song brings a synth-pop feel which is sort of a fusion of Kelly's Breakaway and All I Ever Wanted eras. It's heart-racing and slick, but the chorus drops out for a slow burner of a jam as Kelly sings, "This is my heartbeat song and I'm gonna play it / Been so long, I forgot how to turn it up, up, up, up all night long!"

She even gives us a clever 'Since U Been Gone' reference with the line "I can't believe I ever breathed without you!" Despite all these things that are so right, I'm just not feeling this one. It feels very blah because it's lacking that signature Kelly grit.

It's easily got the best pre-chorus of the year, but I'm bored by this. I'm hoping it'll grow on me, but even with repeated listens it's a snoozefest. Disappointing for the lead single.

Kelly Clarkson's new album Piece by Piece will be released on March 3rd.
