'Out of the Woods' by Taylor Swift

I never thought this day would come. When Taylor Swift started off as a budding country starlet she had a few catchy songs ('Teardrops On My Guitar' instantly comes to mind), but as she progressed she bored me. Nothing original, a boring voice, and then selling out to be a pop star made me hate her. But I can't ignore what she's done now.

Moving on from the increasingly annoying 'Shake It Off', Taylor has finally dropped the shtick and released a mature pop gem that is really a game changer in the pop market. The promo single from her upcoming album 1989, 'Out of the Woods', sees Taylor experimenting with an '80s-influenced brand of synth pop that has become popular in the indie scene.

'Out of the Woods' calls to mind CHVRCHES and Betty Who in all the best ways, and this couldn't be more important right now to move the current pop scene to somewhere not so pumpkin spice basic. While the chorus may not be the most lyrically genius thing ever, Taylor's delivery is chilling and powerful, unlike her usual vanilla timbre.

The song was written by .fun's Jack Antonoff which explains why it has that anthemic feel to it, and while we can assume that it was written about her relationship with Harry Styles it doesn't really matter because this song is the defining moment of her career. I hate myself for loving 'Out of the Woods' so much, but it's simply pop perfection.

Taylor Swift's album 1989 will be released on October 27th.
